Sorry if im raking up an old, well covered subject here. Ive trawled some threads but they are a bit out of date now.

I've just purchased a 40D & am looking at portable storgae options, figured some practical, experienced feedback is better than wading through internet reviews. Probably dont need masses of space, 40GB would im sure be ample, viewing images isnt a must. So has anyone got any good tips & are the following possible;

Are there any external hard drives (used with a PC ) that have card readers that can be used as additional storgae at home as well as photo backup on a trip?

Has anyone used their Ipod, can this hold RAW imagies? I pressume its via the photo adapter but have heard download time is lengthy.

Grateful for any advice.
Cheers

I use an 80GB Nextodi (http://nextodi.co.uk/) when travelling. Extremely easy to use, turn it on, pop in your memory card. There's only one button on the thing. The batteries are pretty good, allowing for several 4gb full card uploads before the need to recharge.

I use an Epson P5000, but some people here use a Notebook, which seems to be a better and cheaper option now.

I've got a 40GB Jobo Giga One and has served me well for several years. If viewing isn't a necessity, then it's a decent buy and something that lives in my camera bag wherever I go.

I had a 40gb portable harddrive with screen for a while, it was a handy thing but after a while I stopped using it. As the price of memory cards have fallen I have got more of them so found that simply using cards easily got me through a day in the field. I suspect that you could buy 40gb of cards for less than a portable harddrive.

True. When I was in Mull I found having it really handy. If I was going out for a day or a weekend then I would take several memory cards and leave the Gigavu for longer trips. I'd also say its best to get several smaller cards instead of one big one just in terms of single point of failure etc.

With 32GB CF cards selling as low as $50, this is much less of a problem than it was a few years ago. If you can afford to carry a bit more weight, older generation low-end netbooks are selling for $200 range and come with at least 160GB of storage. It is even possible to install ZoomBrowser and DPP on these things to quickly scan through images and bin the hopeless ones...

We use a Canon M80, I've got the 40D, hubby the 1D. It has a nice screen, takes RAW and easy to use

For my Africa trip I'm taking three lots of storage (yes, I am a bit paranoid). There's a Netbook with 120GB, a Hypderdrive Colorspace with 320GB and I'm also taking a few 16GB SD cards. The plan is to dump all the photos from the three cameras (mine and Didi's) onto the Hyperdrive, then copy my photos across to the Netbook. I'll use Faststone on the netbook to cull out any obvious duds. Any real gems will get copied to one of the CF cards as tertiary backup.

like postcardcv and hollis_f I feel that becuase memory cards are so dirt cheap now (provided you don't get them in jessopes ;)) its easir and cheaper just to get more cards for you camera; and the external solutions are more geared towards portable backup methods - great on a one off long trip like africa and something where you might take a laptop instead and just leave it in the hotel rather than always carry it in the field with you. Smaller backup units are the sort of thing I would want to take camping when your not going to be back for a while and a laptop is rather too big in size and weight

We are starting a trip of unknown duration and distance on Sunday and I will be using a Compaq Notebook for storage and processing. It has 223 GB of available hard drive. I can use DVD for secondary storage/backup although I may go for a large capacity memory stick. As a storage device, I'm sure it will work well but processing on a laptop will be a challenge. I think it will be more of a sorting/cropping approach than full PP.

I had an epson p4000 but sold it for a netbook. for the money 250.00 notes you can have a small lightweight laptop with 120 gig plus of storage. you can also edit you images while your away.

epson is good but a bit slow dependant on the file size you shoot in. and smaller than a netbook if size is an issue
