Not many people have the 400f2.8 for birding but I would expect it to be a cracking lens. You obviously have a problem though , should handle the 1.7 TC with ease.
Which model and how old is the lens ? Maybe it's overdue a service ?

Hi Rioja,
Its only just over two years old and is the AFS model. I took it to Nikon U K today they have to be the worst company i have ever daelt with.
You are not allowed to talk to or see anyone apart from the receptionist who just answers the phone and puts you on to there support line which is based in Ireland.

Grays of Westminster told me that my 6 week old Nikon D300 could be faulty and not the lens if this is the case it is the second D300 that has not worked with this lens.

I presume you mean F.O.C. A 2 year old AFS model and you get a brand new VR. That's more than a result... congratulations.

out of interest why did you not take it to Nikon direct? They are in South west London you should be able to talk to the service people direct as that's where you can take your camera for sensor cleans.
curioulsy I have oddity with a d80 and a 70-300 afs. The d80 has autofocus issues with this lens (locks on mini af distance). Now is it the lens or the camera? as a test I stuck a Tamron 17-50f2.8 on the d80 and the 70-300afs on the d300 both combos worked - go figure.

Hi Pete,
You can only go to their Head office if someone gives you permission to be there, when you get there you have two women on reception that spend all day telling people to contact the service centre which is in Ireland and this has to be done by phone or e mial.
It is the sellers responsibility to sort out any problems and not the manufacturer, so i took it to Jacobs Digital Photo and Video, and then Fixation an authorised Nikon Repairer what a waste of time Fixation are.

Painful journey but nice result well done. Sigma are the same dropped my 500 off this morning but only after booking the visit. Since my lens was returned in May it has had mouse like tendancies and squeaks when focussing, fingers crossed
