There used to be a pair of Great Crested Grebes and Tufted Duck about until recently. Plus a few kinds of gull, which are still there.

If you go down to the riverside and walk towards Stannah you'll see more than that. There's Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Shelduck, Goldfiches, Linnets, Buzzard and others.

If you're prepared to take a risk there's access all the way to Stannah but you need to be careful circumnavigating Billy's Hole. That's the bottomless marsh that the original railway line was meant to cross.

The pools have been there for many years and have had a number of good birds in their time. From memory these include Great Grey Shrike, Wood Sandpiper, Black-necked Grebe and Iceland Gull. Just down the entrance road there have been Little Bunting and several Lapland Bunting, and one of the latter was on the reserve last year. So whilst the habitat is not ideal it does get decent birds.

For what it's worth I am doing BTO Atlas work in over 60 tetrads on the Fylde and nearby and the square where I had the most species in a two hour visit was this one this spring. This included such decent birds as Twite, Whinchat, Grasshopper Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat.

That's a lot of info. I think that I should go there more often. The times that I go seem to coincide with a multitude of dog walkers. I'll keep plugging away, though.

Out of interest. When my neighbour died I was left some books and one of them was a bird ID tome, an old one. Logged in it is a sighting of a Shoveler, a Tufted Duck, Goldeneye and Common Scoter on 15/2/84 on Jameson Road. Other ticks are Eider, Red breasted Merganser (m and f) and Shelduck. I don't know the dates of these, though. I'd guess at around the same time.

Me, I'm just happy to tick the birds that I've seen and let the photo exif explain the rest. Assuming I get a photo that is. :)
