Hi folks, I don't want to start a new multi-page discussion as this is old hat, but I've just got myself a 40d at last, (Upgrade from 400d), and was curious as to which settings to use to optimise its performance. I mainly shoot BIF and Macro.

Currently I use Al servo, centre focus point, spot focussing, auto iso, high speed burst and aperture priority for BIF. Macro I use auto iso, single shot, centre point focus, manual or auto focus and apertutre priority.

I'm sure this discussion has happened many times before and you must be very tired of it by now. If someone could direct to the relevant thread or article I'd be very grateful.

I use:
continuous shooting
AI servo
Centre focus point
Spot metering
auto focus
manual mode (meter off grey/grey equivalent)
aperture - as wide as possible, stop down slightly if light permits.
shutter speed - try for 1/500+
manual iso - adjust to allow fast shutter speed.
Take test image and adjust exposure as needed.

At least thats roughly what I'm doing at present!
