Canon have just launched variation on the cash back system for people buying the 50D or the 500D in the next two months. This time you have to send them an old camera as well as your proof of purchase! http://www.canon.co.uk/eostradein/

I notice it's for in-store purchases only. I wonder how in-store prices with the cash back will compare with online prices without?
It could be useful if you had an Olympus with a messy viewfinder to part exchange, to pluck a completely random example from the air. ;)

I'd not noticed that... the shop I picked up the leaflet in was ~£10 higher than the WHE price, so still worth going for.
Looking at the list of retailers, WHE are on there, but presumably you'd have to pick the camera up to get the form...

I have just been to one of their listed stores and the price for a 50D is £809.99. I found this price at Camera World, London. I didn`t notice the price of the 500D.

just desperate to do some selling. Why not just reduce the price by that amount instead of faffing about.

Because a lot of people will buy the camera and then not get around to sending of for the cashback... I remember reading a while ago that only ~40% of people get round to sending in for their cashback! They aren't alone in doing this sort of offer, Nikon have just launched cashback on some of their DSLRs and a number of manufacturers are running them on compact cameras and camcorders.

Ideal for anyone with an old film camera - I have a EOS 1000 fn which I would be lucky to get 75p for, trouble is finding the receipt.

I read the offer as asking for receipt for the new camera. Is this a way of not having to pay warranty claims ?

You are right Mike, it is a receipt for the new camera to allow you to claim the rebate from Canon, although it says original receipt I take it to be the same as all the other Canon rebates and that a copy of the original would be ok (nobody in there right mind would send the actual original would they?).
Just had a look at the participating stores, strange how it is limited like this - I don't think there is anyone within £75 worth of petrol to me :C (slight exaggeration but it certainly is a minimum of 150 mile round trip for me)

Duh :C only looked at the first page. Brings the 50D down to around £750 I guess, not that I have any plans concerning either of the cameras at the moment.

When the new model comes out it will be interesting to see how the 40d drops in price, as it would be a nice second camera or a good bargain 1st

I reckon the price of new 40D's has already bottomed out at around £570, they are already getting harder to get as dealers clear their stock - although used ones will continue to drop as new models come out but that is applicable to any body. When the 60D comes out it will be the price of a new 50D that will fall as there is still leeway to lower prices with this camera.
