Can someone help with where to acquire Polystyrene (styrofoam) for filling a bean bag with. Is there a special type? :t:

I think people usually just buy some dried beans from a shop and use those.

You can actually buy flame retardent polystyrene balls on ebay but it looks as if they are biggish bags, you could try a habedashery or craft store.

Thanks Fozzy but the reason I asked about Styrofoam is that it's a recommended alternative to beans or rice :t:

Cheers Marmot, never considered that.
I have just realised that I have some leftover cartons in the shed containing a polystyrene product used for packaging - this I think would be ideal.
Many thanks to all for commenting. B (:

Make sure it is polystyrene, some of the white packaging stuff that looks like polystyrene is very soluble in water.

You may find that you need a little weight in your bean bag for it to settle & support your camera. I filled half & half with barley & poly balls to keep the weight down whilst still having some bulk.
Big bag of polly balls for about a fiver in Boyes, if you have stores down there.

depends on weight of your lens, i have 400.2-8, vr. very heavy, i've tried both. the polystyrene are light, but i found if insuficent ammount of balls it was ok for shots in line but when i wanted to pan it was sunk in hollow of the bag, i've now tried the bag with bird seed, lot heaver but very stable. you can allways give the birds some seed. i'd try both if i were you, hope this is usefull. I use the Canon 400f5.6 with a bean bag. I've also replaced the polystyrene balls with bird seed. Its now far more stable.

After trying both, have gone for bird seed as my preference. Thanks to all who answered. :t::t::t:
