View Full Version : Some juicy rumours

Someone in a hide the other day was telling me that the 1d mark4 is soon to be here and there's some kind of advertisement on the Japenese Canon site, just a few pics of it and 'Coming soon'. Can't be bothered trying to navigate a japanese site so haven't checked myself. Said also that it had been tested in America hidden within a 1d MkIII body and that the ISO performance was supposedly awesome.

Also said something about a new revised Canon 500mm F4 IS coming out around Crhristmas 2010.
Don't know where he got this info and I'm not saying I believe him, I'm not saying he was lying either, it's just some juicy gossip I'm passing on.

Cheers all. B (:

I am interested in this rumour.
Search the Japanese web:
http://digicame-info.com/2009/06/eos-1d-mark-iv.html#more
I am not too good in Japanese, so just can roughly figure out the content. (some may be wrong)
a 1.3 crop.
Below 16 MP
ISO 50 - 26500
sRaw is 8MP and comparable to 1DIIIq quality.
ISO 3200 image: clean. 6400 - 12800 Very good after processing.
FPS slightly higher than 1dIII
AF capability - improved, also improved in low light
Life View - not too suitable for sports, but OK for other functions.
Video and LCD - similar to 5DII
Some changes in button position, improved grip.
Foot note: This rumour is of unknown reliabilty, but sounds good, though nothing too surprising.....
FPS said to be around 12.
(This is a very rough interpretation by my limited Japanese knowledge, may be someone can make any correction if I am wrong.)

There are always rumours like this doing the rounds, so far I've seen three different sets for specs for the mkIV... no doubt part of some of them will be correct. Even worse is the rumours about the 60D, there are so many of them around they are getting more extreme by the day. Lens rumours are much the same, I doubt that the 500 f4 is next in line for a makeover - it's a popular lens which sells well, they're more likely to update and older lens or hopefully bring out something completely new.

It is likely that there will be an update to the 1D line between now and Feb'10. It is hard to predict exactly what Canon might do. A reasonable expectation is a 1D MkIV with increased resolution (~14-16MP) and increased high-ISO performance.

There are rumors flying around a "junior" 1.3x crop camera with the pro-AF system that will be lower cost than the 1D MkIII and will also support EF-S lenses in sensor crop-mode. Although a camera like this might be very interesting, it is a significant change to Canon's established product line.

A much more likely scenario is a 50D upgrade announcement in the August/September time frame. This camera may not be named 60D, but it will most definitely have support for EF-S lenses and 1080p video. Most Canon customers are looking for an upgrade to the AF system. If the sensor resolution remains at 15MP, I am not sure what Canon engineers can do to improve DR or high-ISO noise. Higher resolution would probably be a disaster. At the same time, Canon has never reduced the resolution during a model upgrade.

We may see some new interesting features like faster contrast based AF and very high rate (20fps+) shooting with an electronic shutter (no mirror flap, no mechanical shutter delay).

I certainly would like to see a 60D with a better AF system that works with max aperture of f/8, and a better sensor with improved dynamic range (an additional f-stop in the highlight range would be ideal) and high-ISO noise somewhere between the 5D MkII and 50D. However, I am not keeping my hopes high...

I hope they improve upon the auto white balance of the 40d...

My hopes for the future "60D" are very similar to macshark's, though I would also like to see improved weathersealing on the camera body as well - I really annoys me that only the 1D line at the moment has full outdoor usage whilst with the rest we have to fear rain damage and water all the time.

As for the new 1D camera as well as the general improvements expected I also expect it to support a video mode (I seriously thing this is here to stay) with a further possible advantage over the 5DM2 version

I think people have been hoping/asking for that since the 10D and 300D! Yet very little has happened in that respect so far. My 40D certainly isn't superior to my 350D in that particular respect. As I see it the solution is to shoot RAW and adjust the WB manually using color temperature.

I'm not that bothered myself about weatherproofing - no weatherproof lenses, so a weatherproof body is a moot point - but if the "60D" was no more than my 40D but with Digic IV, native AF at F/8, proper (Nikon stylee) Auto ISO and the ability to dial in a slight delay in AF reacquisition, I'd buy one on the day of release.

A few more AF points would be nice, but not essential: really, 9 plus AF-Assist points around the centre point would be right on the money for me.

As it is the 40D's AF is really good, even on the peripheral points: the assist points round the middle - and the ability to slow up AF re-seeking when it gets distracted by the BG a tad where necessary - would just make BIFs a bit easier.

Unfortunately AF at f8 is unlikely to make it onto anything but a 1D body, I suspect the same is true of weatherproof sealing and the 45 point AF system - they need to keep somethings exclusive to the top end bodies or no one would buy them. I do have a simple solution to most of your requirements though Keith, just buy the 1D mkII that I'm selling ;)

That's why some people I know of prefer Nikon. The D300 has a 51-point focusing and the camera is at "affordable" price.

Indeed. I find about half of my photos need manual adjustment. Sunlight color temp changes throughout the day anyway, so manual WB isn't really the answer either! Even beyond WB, does anyone find they have to play with greens sometimes?

Now that Nikeon has a FF camera with 24MP, and the 5D2 has 21MP, I would expect Canon's next flagship FF camrea to blow away the competition on every level:

More MP
Better ISO
Better noise control
Better processor
Better sensor
Better AF
Better metering

than anything else on the market. Considering that most of the competition is just now catching up to what Canon has had for a couple of years , the future 1 series camera for the pros is bound to astound!!
