The family and I are holidaying in The Lake District this June and the kids had heard that there were a few Puffins across in nearby St Bees Head.

Has anyone been and seen Puffins around June?

And apart from the Puffins what should I look out for? I heard black guillemots?

Do the different species have their own levels on the cliffs for nesting, where do I view from etc.?

Hints and tips welcome..

Thanks,

Paul.

Paul,

Wasn't it my post on an earlier thread?

Puffins and Black Guillemots should both be present in June. There is no easy answer re viewing, it is a decent walk from St Bees village or Sandwith to the best vantage points, which are the tops of the cliffs or a bay between the north and south cliffs (Fleswick Bay).
There is a road all the way to the lighthouse but unfortunately it is private.

You can watch from the coastal car park at St Bees Village and see a few auks, in Feb I was lucky enough to get a Black Guillemot from here but your chances are much reduced.

Other things to look for include Stonechats, Rock Pipits and Fulmars.

Stephen.

Paul, yes you will need to be able to walk to be able to see anything. It can be quite wild and windy up there,so if you have young children try to pick a decent day weatherwise.
