Hi all,
I am going down to Bognor Regis by train next Saturday and have 3 hours spare in which I was hoping to do some birdwatching. I've looked in to going to Pagham Harbour but (it seems) only way of getting there/back is by taxi. Is this worth considering at this time of year? Are there any alternative sites that I should consider (maybe on the train route from London)?

Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

Cheers
John

Hi John

I can't remember bus numbers it's too long ago but you can definitely get a bus (via Rose Green) from Bognor to Pagham village. From there you have access to the North Wall and Pagham Lagoon - these are at the east side of Pagham Harbour.

The Chichester Bus will stop at North Mundham and from there you can either explore the Gravel Pits, or get another bus to Littlehampton, which passes Church Norton and the west side of the harbour.

Here's the link to the Opus page (http://www.birdforum.net/opus/Pagham_Harbour#Maps) on Pagham.

Many thanks Delia for the comments and Opus link:t:. I had tried Googling for buses to Pagham but without luck. Glad they are available. I don't think, in the 3 hours I have available, I can consider going via Chichester to West side of Harbour but believe I can fill the time really well on East side |^|with, maybe, gravel pits thrown in.

Hi John - hope this link works for you:

http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk/se/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2

It's route 60 and takes around 20 minutes from the centre of Bognor.

Ask for Church Farm; from there you can either walk through the Caravan Park or walk down Church Lane to the North Wall.

I'm finding it difficult to orientate myself on this map (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=493310&y=98997&z=115&sv=493310,98997&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=654&ax=493310&ay=98997&lm=0), but I think the bus stop will be where I've put the arrow (ish)!!!

Basically you come out of the station and head south, down through the main shopping street past Boots etc. Then at the T junction cross the road and there are bus stops along there. You'll need to find the right one. It'll take at least 5 minutes to walk that.

I think that site I gave you... if you put the train and bus journey in it gives you the walking times as well.

Maybe the Tourist Information Centre can give you proper directions.

Thanks again Delia.

If I put in Victoria to Pagham then tells me to take train to Chichester and catch No.60 bus from there. Stupid website - it doesn't know I already have tickets to Bognor :king:

There is a bus every 20 minutes so if miss one, do not have to wait long. I'm sure I can confirm at station your bus-stop position.

Can't really help with the transport side of things but Pagham is never disappointing. Migration has started and it will be worth the trip.

Hi John
...or get another bus to Littlehampton, which passes Church Norton and the west side of the harbour.

Delia's comments are good, apart from be aware of this suggestion as a bus to Littlehampton will be taking you away from Pagham and Chichester and does not pass Church Norton; Littlehampton is about 10 miles to the east of Pagham along the coast whereas Church Norton is to the south and is only accessible via roads to the west of the harbour - they are not connected by bus at all.

The 51 bus from Chichester bus station (a stone's throw from the train station) goes every 15 minutes and stops at Sidlesham and the hide there overlooking Ferry Pool.

LOL did I really say that!:gh::eek!: I meant Selsey of course:-O

My brain was working overtime and I was wondering if there was anywhere to suggest in that direction if Pagham wasn't a goer.

Sometimes the ability to multi-task doesn't work too well

:-O I know the feeling too well Delia! Especially as the years fly by... ;)

But in the general direction of Littlehampton from Chichester you have the WWT place at Arundel, and West Beach/Climping just over the river from Littlehampton - both good this time of year with migrants too.

But Pagham is prob best :t:

Many thanks for suggestions Stoggler. I think Littlehampton is too much out of my way. However, Sidlesham may be a good bet if weather is bad - trian passes through Chichester on way to Bognor (I think I have one of the bargains of the year for rail fares - £6 return for day trip Victoria to Bognor!!)

Hi John

There are some good bargains on the trains if you book in advance. I've just bought a single from Victoria to Littlehampton on Friday for £3...

However, just to warn you, trains do not go through Chichester on the way to Bognor from Victoria. The station before Bognor is Barnham, and Barnham is a junction where you change to either go in the following directions:

south to Bognor
west to Chichester/Portsmouth/Southampton
east to Littlehampton or Worthing/Hove/Brighton, and also to London via Hove or the Arun valley

So afraid Chichester is a seperate journey from Bognor and requires you having to change at Barnham, as can be seen on this map:

That would be rather unusual John. Bognor is the end of the line.

Normally the train splits at Barnham Junction, one part of it going to Bognor the other bit goes to Chichester and perhaps on to Portsmouth (you need to ensure you're on the correct part of the train.

If it's raining... act stooopid and switch to the Chichester bit of the train;)

Hi John (again)

Re-reading your opening post, you mention that you have three hours to spare when in Bognor. That wouldn't be sufficient time to get round the west side of the harbour, do some birding and then get back to Bognor. For that reason, try and get to the east side of the harbour for the North Wall and Pagham Lagoon. My fiancée works in Bognor, she may well know of buses that way - I'll ask her.

Not at all Stoggler - it's good to get confirmation from different sources.

We just need to know where the bus stop is - your fianceé could help with that

Thanks for that info Stoggler :t:. I had just assumed that
(1) as Bognor was end of the line and
(2) as Chichester train left Victoria at same time as Bognor train

that train was passing through Chichester to Bognor. Hadn't considered the train splitting.

Yes (with reference to your follow-on message), East side is now out of the question because of timescales. West side it is (unless some rare bird is known to be on East side, in which case a taxi would be used |:d|.

Thanks again to you and Delia for all your advice. All sorted (except bus-stop position ;))

Cheers
John
