Visiting Peak District

We are visiting the Peak District soon and staying in the Buxton area for a week, and wondered if anyone knew of any good Birding sites to visit.

Hi Dawn.
Goyt Valley is 2-3 miles away, you could pick up Redstart, Spotted and Pied Flycatcher plus others (sadly didn't see any Wood Warbler there this year, but they are not that far from Buxton if you don't mind a 30 min drive or so - see Update 60 in below) and then Danebower Quarry another couple of miles further on for Ring Ouzel - see Update 58 in attached http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?p=1552249#post1552249

Macclesfield Forrest has 4 reservoirs, one which has a large heronry, pied Flycaychers, Wood warbler close to the visitors centre if your very lucky

Going the otherway from Buxton (towards leek) you have Tittesworth reservoir (I cant do links, but Google the latest sightings page)

Axe edge moor (close to the Cat & Fiddle pub / also near Danebower) good for Red Grouse and Curlew

Aong with Nicks suggestion none of these locations are more than 20 minutes drive from Buxton

As has been said above, try Goyt Valley, Macclesfield Forest, Danebower and Tittesworth Resr are worthy of a visit. I would add two more (very underwatched sites) Lamaload Resr and Bosley Resr.

Many thanks for the suggestions you all made,we are going to try and do as many as we can and then go back to work for a rest.We have only been Birding for just over a year so we still have a lot to learn and see ,we would really love to see a Dipper is there likely to be any chance of seeing one during our trip and if so whereabouts.

If you want Dipper, go to Wildboarclough. Park in the centre of the village by the bridge & walk along the roadside either north or south. Keep viewing the river and you should see dipper along there, may have to walk a bit tho.

To add to CBs suggestion, the best place I have seen it is by the Stone bridge 100mtrs from the Cragg inn pub Wildboarclough. It sometimes flys up the overflow tunnel just underneath the Bridge.

You should get good views if it is about

Thats a great help,you have all been really helpful.It does look like you have got some really good sites and the picture of the Dipper is excellent if we can get one as good as that we will be happy.We will be up there in a weeks time and will post a thread when we get back of all that we saw and hopefully some pictures too.

All the moors to the NW of Sheffield can be productive, with raptors, golden plover, red grouse etc., but be warned sometimes you'll get precicely nothing!

Pied fly, redstart etc. will be very difficult to find now, even in their strongholds, unfortunately.

Yep we do. You can spend all day birdwatching in east cheshire and never see another birdwatcher.

Just a note of thanks, had a rare day off together with the girlfriend and this thread encouraged us to head out to a part of the Peak we've not done before. Danebower was best, a p'ed off male Ring Ouzel there finally meant I'd bagged one of my biggest bogeys, plus a close quartering Raven put up a couple of Red Grouse - seemed to lunge at one of them. Wheatears around too, but come on, I'm just back from Mull - they were everywhere!
So not a lot of birds around Danebower, the ones that were there were all good'uns though.

Glad you had a good day in the peaks. Ring Ousels should be leaving the area soon, so your quite lucky.

Not really the best time, bird wise, unfortunately. As Pete says all the migrants will be hard to find now, Pied Fly, Redstart, Tree Pipit etc.
You may come across something on the moors, but they can be very difficult, particularly if you are inexperienced.All the larger bodies of water.. Carsington water , Tittesworth etc will probably be quiet too, awaiting the influx of wildfowl as we come into autumn, though keep your eye out for Osprey and waders, passing through.Still I think you will find it a beautiful area so enjoy your visit, and you should be guaranteed Dipper..if all else fails try Lathkill Dale, not far from Bakewell.As always a little local knowledge is worth its weight in gold, so chat to any birders you bump into.

As everyone has said earlier birds can be a bit tricky at this time of year if you dont mind travelling theres plenty at old moor rspb at the moment near barnsley plenty of mud to attract passing waders (a bit in short supply this summer due to all the rain )B (: see the yorkshire thread ,godwits sandpipers common and green redshanks snipe and lots of others if you vist the goyt valley look out for a birder in camo gear that will probably be me i will help any way i can

A Big Thank-you to everyone who replied to my thread,you have certainly given us lots of ideas on places to visit.We would usually have two weeks away and be able to visit lots of places but this is going to be a very relaxing week Birding before the run up to our daughters wedding on the 5th Sept.

Been up the Goyt Valley today. Quiet on way up, plenty on mipits. At top good flight of red grouse, hope they keep their heads down. Over to Danebower, no ring ouzel but nice goldfinches, linnets and again mipits. Large numbers of swallows also around Danebower. Moved onto Wldboarclough and a very accommodating dipper by the bridge near Crag Inn, no grey wag though. Drove out towards Lamaload where there were a 4 kestrels in the air together, suspect family group. Also good butterflies in the car park here.
There are birds around the area, its really lovely and enjoyable.

Best of luck with your stay in buxton if you draw a blank on the other dipper sites you could try morrison at buxton pull into carpark walk back to the way in look over bridge to your left downstream have seen dipers and grey wagtails there in the past if that does not work you could try the only spot i know for dippers in norfolk on the river at glanford north norfolk near the ford B (:

Another dipper site is Lathkill Dale, if you fancy a walk. Monsal Dale is also a good area for them.
