Anyway to shut off the speed light function on a nikon coolpix 4500?

yes there is, but I'm struggling to remember exactly how without one in front of me... I seem to remember that when swicthed off the flash will still pop up but it won't fire.

EDIT - I think the button for switching off the flash is on the top of the swivelling lens section of the camera, as far as I knwo the flash can be turned off in all modes (except fully auto).

The button on the lens section marked with a flash symbol and with ISO printed beside it cycles through Auto > Flash Cancel > Red-eye reduction > Anytime flash > Slow Sync and back to Auto. the symbol to show which mode you are in is at the top right of the screen. Auto is shown by no symbol. See pages 64 to 67 if you have the manual.
