Get an external hard drive 500GB or even 1TB and back them up onto it. Get into a routine, use something like Synctoy (http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/synctoybeta.aspx) to automate the process. If you want to be doubly sure get two drives and double up, get a fire safe for one and store the other one away from home, (leave it at work, at a friends etc).

Another wote for an external hard drive. I bought a 320GB 3 years ago and upgraded to a 1TB half a year ago.

If you still have the hard drive or you have not formatted it you may still be able to recover the images. 1st rule when a pc dies leave the HD alone as normally the data is recoverable (unless it was the hard drive that died)

Best and only way to store important data is to have at least two copies in at least two separate places.
Most economic way is to use an external harddrive THAT IS ONLY CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER DURING BACK-UPS and otherwise stored in a safe place.
I have a primary and a secondary harddrive in my desktop -not a raid system-. The primary holds everything (OS, software, files), the secondary backs up the files in case the primary bites the dust. In case the whole computer goes up in smoke files are also backed-up on an external HD .....
Never had to learn it the hard way, but I have seen it happen to a number of people and drew my conclusions
