We have friend staying with us from the Russian Federation. He tells me that this morning "in the middle of the night" but possibly the start of the Dawn Chorus,he heard plain and clear the most beautiful bird-song,above all others and loud. What are the possibilities ? We live in a suburb of Oxford, with nearbye parks,a lot of tall conifers, large hedges etc.,,but close to a main road.I thought the blackbird might be a contender. At dusk sometimes, one bird I cannot spot, launches forth from high up inside a tall conifer (30/40 foot),could be the same one.
As we have 5 million letters waiting to be delivered due to a local post strike for over two weeks,no "answers on a postcard" !
Thanks all,
Mervyn.

I think if it was really loud my guess would be Song Thrush. They tend to repeat phrases over and over again, which is fairly distinctive.

I would agree with Andrew- Song Thrush. Although they have a tendency to sing from exposed, high positions where they are easily viewed, in my experience.

Robin!.

Thats been my "too early morning alarm clock" for quite a while!. I was listening to one at 5am yesterday morning, decided I couldn't sleep and was in the office at Sunbury-on-Thames at 06:30.

I have seen two Robins in the garden, but also a thrush, only couple of times skulking around in the shadows, not sure if a song-thrush or not.
Thanks,guys !
Mervyn.

Hi Mervyn,
Song Thrush,Blackbird or perhaps Robin(latter less likely based on 'above all others and loud')
