I have used the center-weighted metering for bird photography for a while know but would like to know if I use the 3D Matrix setting will there be any difference with my images. I could just try it but I don't want to mess up a good day of shooting and was looking for any first hand experience with these settings strictly for bird photography. Thanks for any info.

From own experience everything but spot or center weighted exposure metering will result in wrong exposure of the subject (bird, as long as it doesn't take up the full frame). Even more so if the subjects moves in front of an uneven lit background. I would stick with spot metering as first choice, even more so with the D50 were changing of the metering mode involves more than just the push of a button.
