The first of our eight Great Tit chicks suddenly headed for the exit and left the nest this afternoon. I'm hoping that our first fledgling didn't go too soon. However, several hours after its departure there is no sign of it the garden so I'm hoping it has made it to a nearby tree or shrub.
The other seven chicks have shown no interest in leaving so far, but I would guess that they are likely to fly tomorrow, bringing to an end the webcam coverage which has operated non-stop since the last week of March. If you would like to look back over their progress, there is a detailed, illustrated diary which covers from the parents' first inspection of the box early in March and right up to the present.
