Hello Everyone
We are staying in the Filey area for a few days from Monday 7th June with the intention of visiting Bempton Cliffs. We would be grateful for information on other interesting birding sites within the area, up to around an hour's drive away.
We have no general target species, our list is too small to single out 1 bird we want to see!! So we would appreciate any info.
Thanks
Colin & Kay

Bempton is a must as it will be in full swing by then. We'll be down there too, but more likely 12th June.
Last Spring we held our Bird Forum Oop North Bash! ( a sort of a get together for members) at Bempton and Flamborough -
Report 1 (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=5230&highlight=flamborough) - a description of where and what we saw.
Report 2 (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=5253&highlight=flamborough) - a few photos from the trip.
Check out the County by County Index and the new Locations Directory for a few more places to visit.

Colin and Kay,
The timing of your visit may be a bit late for passage birds but don't forget places like Blacktoft Sands, RSPB reserve. I was there many moons ago and they had several books on Yorkshire birding. Johnnie Mathers book on the 'WHERE TO WATCH' series YORKSHIRE (obviously) is a must.
Buy it before or during, you won't be dissapointed.

As you will be staying in Filey, why not call in a see what is happening at Filey Dams... even if it is not fantastically busy, it might be a pleasant way to spend a warm evening.
It is a very small reserve at the back of a housing estate in the town... one hide and a bit of a boardwalk as well I think.
I'll try and find a link...

I was up at Bempton earlier in the week. It was busy - had trouble finding a space in the car park. Birdwise, the cliffs are packed - I really don't know how they stay on the ledges, yet alone manage to lay and raise young. Some birds had eggs but it was a bit early for young. Lots on the cliffs and on the sea. Also plenty of interest in scrub meadow pipits, tree sparrows and various chats etc. A great day out.
Also stopped a Blacktoft on the way home. A bit quiet when I was there. The staff said the best time to go at the moment is at high tide so that the waders get pushed off the mudflats and on to the reserve, Did see some avocets with young, which was nice.
The bird hide a Filey Brigg is closed a the moment, I believe. This is because of crumbling cliffs causing the path down to disappear! You can still she the Brigg from the footpath that runs from the carpark in Northcliffe(?) park, but you will need a scope to see the end of the rocks.
Have a good trip!

The bird hide is open to members of FBOG. Join and you'll get access. you can easily walk to the Brigg at low tide.
The cafe in the Northcliffe Country/ caravan park is owned by a birdwatcher and they have lots of current birding reports etc in stock. (the first and last time I met him was in the mountains of Israel..small world!) Filey is a great town.
Enjoy: you'll love it.
