Im just wondering this because recently in my garden Ive seen a few females go to the nestbox and pear in but not go in last night I saw 3 or 4 females all over the nest pocket thing I was wondering if one of them wanted to nest and one did sit in for abit then came out again. This is what's been happening this morning, one went into the nest pocket while another perched on the ledge on the nestbox peering inside but not going in. So would they be thinking of nesting or do you think they are just wondering which place to nest for next year? watching them o now its a delight you just think they will go in but no. Ps I sawBlue Tit's chicks that have obviously left their nest but still getting fed I saw them doing that "feed me feed me" thing and a parent fed them.

Yes, they can. Great Tits can have a second brood whilst Blue Tits only have the one. Makes you wonder why Great Tits aren't twice as common as Blue Tits doesn't it?

I read recently that on average, only one chick in any bluetit brood is likely to live long enough to go on to breed the next year! Perhaps the survival rate is even worse for great tits?

Euan, a pair of Great Tits started nest building in my nest box about 2 weeks ago, I believe the female is now sitting on eggs. My nest box had remained empty this year up untill then so I am quite pleased especially as this is the first time I have had Great tits nesting in my garden. I believe this is the second brood for them as previous to them moving in I had seen them feeding youngsters.

One other reason is that Great Tit clutches are usually smaller than Blue Tit clutches

Did you know Blue tits and Great tits generally have larger broods in their natural woodland habitat than in gardens? They seem to be doing better in gardens though, raising more broods.

Hi Jake,
I'd guess that's down to better winter survival, with peanuts etc. A natural deciduous woodland is a pretty bleak place in winter (evergreens are better, though, more shelter, more food)
