On a recent visit to Holkham we visited the Joe Jordan hide for Spoonbills. I wondered about the Joe Jordan that the hide was named after. All I can think of is the tothless Man Utd footballer but surely it can not be him.

of course it's that Joe Jordan Andrew (drew a blank on Tawnies btw - sorry - time of year)

he even went to Italy - if i remember rightly A.C. Milan?

Not your typical Italian style forward!

Joe Jordan played for my club, Southampton, between August 1984 and February 1987. I had a look at Google, but couldn't find any mention of him being a birder. Besides, he was a Scot, not a Norfolk native, but you never know...

Was he a birder? If not why was the hide named in his honour without him being dead?

not toothless Joe, who is very much alive and probably plays a good game still - only about 50.....

Also played and managed my team, Bristol City, as well! Never knew him to be a birder though.

Possible but I reckon it is someone who did a lot for birding and has passed on to the next world.

Joe Jordan played for Leeds as I remember - some big donkey who could head the ball a bit when it was hoofed up field.
WHo knocked his teeth out - thats much more interesting.

Maybe he just responded to an appeal and paid for the hide - doesn't have to be a birder, just rich (which lots of footballers are), and generous with it.

There's a scheme going (mainly in the US) where wealthy people can have newly discovered birds (/ insects / plants / whatever) named after them, if they pay a goodly sum towards research into the species and habitat protection for the habitat the species is discovered in.

Similar things have happened for a long time - the pine Pinus devoniana wasn't found in Devon, it got the name because the Duke of Devonshire funded the botanist who discovered it in Mexico in the 1830s.

Certainly did, three of them. A juve and two adults according to the reports but they all looked the same snuggled in under the rain! I was hoping for Wood Sandpipers but it is a large area isn't it?

Next time, visit the Archie Gemmill hide...overlooking Alan Rough scrape.
They're by the Gordon McQueen ride..opposite Willie Johnston boardwalk.
Holkham was the training camp of the ill fated 1978 World Cup Scotland team....
At the top of the monument in Holkham Park is a statue of Ally Macleod..
soon to be replaced by a one of that great Englishman...
....Sven Goran Ericksson.....our saviour.

That was on the 27th June and I think they may have scarpered as there have been no reports from Holkham in the last week.

I reckon that the RSPB have just taken a football fanatic onto their marketing department, because I also noticed...

The Dennis Wise hide at Titchwell
The Tony Adams hide at Dungeness
The Jurgen Klinsmann hide at Fairy Glen
and the Norman Hunter hide at Fowlmere

...not to mention the new flagship hide, the extremely luxurious and well appointed Ray Parlour hide, which is on the Exe....

"Joe" and "Jordan" aren't exactly rare names so it's not that unlikely that there is/was a birder named Joe Jordan out there. It's when you see an Ashley Grimes Hide or a Remi Moses Hide that you start to sniff a conspiracy.

Always liked Joe Jordan, part of that fine tradition of stealing Leeds' best players and bringing them to us.

Many many years ago when I was a kid (I guess it must have been in the late 70's) I went to a RSPB meeting in Blackpool (at the Imperial Hotel I think-classy eh?) and was amazed to see former Bolton striker Alan Gowling. He might even have been taking on the door fees or pouring out the tea.....................

Alan Gowling was still playing in the late 70s

Perhaps Joe Jordan the fearless, toothless striker did have a hide name after him as he certainly ruffled the feathers of a few defenders as i recall.

John Bird - ex Newcastle
Shaune Teale - ex Villa
John Sparrow - ex Chelsea

can they not be similarly honoured? ;)

Mystery solved, just got back from a week in Norfolk where I made a few enquiries. Both the Joe Jordan and George Washington hides are named after two 'old boys' who did a lot of voluntary work on the reserve.George Wahington was described as being 80ish,looking as though he didn't have a penny in the world but actually drove a Rolls Royce.
