Canon 10D or 300D ?

Hi,

Im looking at my options regarding moving into Digital SLR's. Initially, i may opt for one of the Canons, 10D or 300D, but would consider a Nikon.

Is there much of a difference between these two Canons, to justify the price margin?

Ive printed out the specifications for both, but was now wondering, from peoples experience here, as well as from my very amateur approach, am i best opting for the 300D? (i say this thinking the 300D may be lower in specifications than the 10D)

I feel very limited with a digi-scope setup, when it comes to action shots. So basically that is where im heading with this, hopefully.

Any input or advice from personal experience with these cameras will be greatly appreciated. (Ive spent a good while browsing the other threads on this subject)

The main difference is the buffer size as far as I'm concerned. The 10D allows you to take up to 8 or 9 shots in continuous mode and the 300D only does 4 or 5.
I chose the 300D. With the money you save on that you can then go for one of the more expensive, but worth it, IS lenses.

Thanks for pointing that out, Chris. I guess i could live with the difference. Saying that, until youre in the field, you never realise how useful that little bit extra is.

10D is a better built machine so is somewhat heavier. 300D should perch more easily on the end of a scope. You should be well pleased with either. ;)

I think you'll find the build quality is the same on both models, but yes, the 10D is made of aluminium and the 300D is plastic (resulting in it being 30% lighter). Ofcourse, if you drop either of them, they'll break!

These cameras can be used with scopes, as with e.g coolpix 4500? I take it they need special adapters? Does anyone know what adapter would be required to harness the 300D to a scope? (a Swarovski ST80HD )

Tracker,I asked this question on a thread a couple of nights ago.Not exactly asked if an adapter was available,as there is one made by Swar,it apparently costs £240(I think) and one needs a t-mount costing £20.I saw this advertised by Wilkinson cameras in the BW mag.I asked if anyone had used this adaptor,or knew anything about it,but there were no replies.
Re the cameras,Tracker,I think a great deal is ones personal choice,but the Nikon D70 had a marvellous write up,but the general opinion seemed to be that if you are going to use the camera as more a less a point and shoot,then opt for the 300D,and as Chris says spend the extra on a decent lens.As you know my info on settings etc,is nil,but with this camera I have taken quite a few decent pics with no problem,also I like the fact it is lighter due to the plastic casing,therefore makes it easier for me to handhold,even with the 100-400 lens.If you shop around you can buy secondhand lenses.Mine was a used lens from a dealer.The chap had changed his camera from Canon to Leica and of course the lenses were not compatible,so I was lucky and found an almost new lens ,and was given a 12mth warranty by the dealer.

I have used the 10D + Zeiss 65 but its not really worth the effort. If you get a 100-400 + 2 x extender you get 1200mm with control benefits like AF & Aperture setting which is cancelled using adaptors.

Af won't work in either of these cameras with an effective aperture>f5.6, thus no AF with 100-400 IS + 1.4 or 2x convertor (unless you use the taped connectors trick outlined in an old thread >will give AF if light levels fairly good though focus acquisition is slow).

Comparing the 10D to the 300D is like comparing a Great Dane to a Pekinese - they both bark but which one looks "BIG AND STRONG". 10D anyday - it's far better made for small difference in price and offers more anyway.

Most of the extra functions of the 10D (mirror lockup etc) can be added to the 300D with a firmware upgrade. The 300D is certainly not as robust but costs £300 more in the UK. It depends whether you need the extra build quality. £300 can buy quite a few extra toys...

Oh, and expect the price of the 10D to drop once the 20D is shipping in decent numbers.
