I bought one in February but with a zoom eyepiece you will not find better for the price. If you want to see a scope that is almost identical look through the Nikon ED82 they are almost indistinguishable, if you like the view through that you wil like the ED 78. There is also a secondhand ED 78 with a 30X eyepiece at IN Focus Denby Dale branch for £499 http://www.at-infocus.co.uk/usedequipment.html.

yes, it is by far and a long way the best birding bargain to be had. Better with a x30 though for me.

takes same eyepieces (MC) as the Nikon 82 so to all purposes optically indistinguishable. Excellent for digiscoping too. Were very expensive when they came out. Why don't more people buy them? Beats me for sure, probably a fashion thing - having the right gear seems to be very important these days.

you certainly will not be disappointed

Check out my "Hmmm... which Nikon" in this very forum. I have the same question and some very good answers.

For the record, I'm now past provaricating, and into the negotiation stage with the holder of the other purse-string.

It seems that the ED78 is the Euro bargain and the Pentax PF80 is the US bargain. How do these two scopes compare?

You might prefer to buy the body alone and the new MCII 30xW - now that is a wonderful coupling!
