I've just about decided on the 3021Pro as my next tripod because I like the option of horizontal mounting -- which might occasionally be very useful for camera use -- but since this raises the head a few inches is there any chance it makes the tripod slightly less solid? It reminds me of the Gitzo Explorer, which is of course much more money. Any owners here who could perhaps comment? Thanks...

Hi Dave,
Don't know about 3021 pro, but in my experience any column/arm extension is undesirable if you are looking for maximum rigidity. That said the Explorer is better than most in this respect (and most others) - the ali version is not particularly expensive; only(?) 200g heavier and more rigid than CF. Once in a lifetime buy for me, so far anyway.......

Hmmm... well I just noticed that the 3021 doesn't have spiked feet... Do spiked feet matter?

Most of the time, no. They grip bettter in some situations when its hard to find even weight distribution, or unstable ground/gravel etc.
