Hi, this is my first thread so excuse me if I'm silly question boy. I live in the moorlands and each year for the last 6 years that I've lived here I have had 2 to 3 pairs of Curlew on the moor. I've just realised that I've not heard or seen them for about 2 weeks. Are they likely to have left yet or do I have cause for concern?

Hi Glenn,

It's quite late now for most waders to be on their breeding grounds so I would say it's fairly normal for your Curlews to have moved away from the moors and down to the coast. If they were still about as recently as two weeks ago then they might well have been able to get some young off successfully.

It is quite normal for Curlew to be off their breeding grounds and on the coast by now. The numbers at one roost on the coast here have gone up from a few dozen to 2,500+ in the last two weeks.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. This year is the first time I've realised that I always notice when they arrive but never when they leave.
