I was down there yesterday but missed that one, a superb shot BTW.

Saw Spotted Redshank, Hobby, Marsh Harrier, Wood Sand and Green Sand not to mention two Bearded Tit females from the Xerox Hide along with a whole lot of other birds. A very good day out indeed :t:

A little disappointed with just three Avocet - they're a bit scarce in my area to the north.

Nice shot and you can see the difference between that and Ruff.

Hi Dave,
I agree with Andrew, a nice shot. Interestingly, the bird is an adult (aged by, among other things, the more rusty-fringed scapulars): reports from North America point to widespread breeding failure by many Arctic-breeding waders due to a cold wet spring and summer, and certainly any American waders that I have heard of or seen over here so far this autumn have been adults, or at least subadults, with none of the more expected juveniles.

Is a Buff-breasted similiar in size to a Ruff or closer to a Green/Common Sand?

Hi Dave,

Great pic. Hope it hangs around til tomorrow. I bet the Xerox hide at Blacktoft is fun today - NOT! I reckon it could collapse with 6 billion Bank Holiday birders crammed in.

By the way, do you reckon your joke about about hamsters and sellotape would get deleted if I posted it? :-)

Tom.

Much smaller than a Ruff Andrew - just a bit bigger than a Dunlin.

Saw it on Monday morning alongside a juvvy Reeve.
Incredible! Tiny little bird.
Quite Distinctive in flight too.
Certainly my bird of the Year.

We also had juv WoodSand, Ad LittleStint, there were several Water Rails & Beardies about early on, but as the hides filled.....many birds disappeared.
#It never ceases to amaze me how many noisy birders stick their arms out the windows.... :C

What a fantastic bird & pic....

I'm glad that someone mentioned about Ruff - cos that was pretty much my first thought when I first saw the photo...."If I saw that in the field, I bet I'd just pass over that as a Ruff!!"

I know that there are some differences, but with Ruff being so variable (and me being prone to c*cking it up)

Quite a relief to hear that there is an obvious size difference - not that I'm planning to bump into a BBS anytime soon.....
