I was just wondering was a 100-400 IS lens is equivalant too in magnification times.
I notice when you get to the big lense they go by MM instead of 30x optical or whatever. I'm pretty new to this, i'm sure you can tell.

Hi Blue Jay 82,
If you consider 50mm lens as a 1X magnification, 100-400mm would be 2-8X, sort of "equvalent" to 2-8X binoculars.
Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Wes

And if you own a digital SLR that has a smaller sensor (1.3x or 1.6x), you get an effectively higher magnification. So 400 on a 1.6x camera will give you 8x1.6 or 12.8x, at the full resolution of the sensor.

I just cant believe how close people can make these birds seem. I have the Canon 1S IS with a 10x optical, and I can never get as close as other people. It is only 3.2 mega pixels. Would a higher mega pixels help.

Are you thinking of those pictures that have been digiscoped? They are of a much higher magnification, as the eyepiece stays in the scope (unlike a telephoto lens, where only the objective is there).

hi jay your best bet is 2 get a two times converter that gives u a 800m lens
but use manual and a monapod, dj
