i was in the derwent valley, gateshead today, leaning over a viaduct. i was hoping to spot kingfishers in the stream below, but was stunned to see a bat flying in circles, catching flys!. this was 3:15pm in the afternoon with the sun still blazing! is this common? i have seen hundreds of bats over the years, but never at this time!

doing a quick bit of birding today while walking my dog in newcastle - 1/2mile down the tyne from the town centre. was looking over the barrier at the water (high tide) and was stunned to see a pipestrelle bat in broad daylight, flying up and down the tyne - just about skimming the water on ocassions. went further along to get a better view, couldnt believe how close i was getting to it (2meters). it was even doing circles around the fishing line of the local fishermen! as always, my camera was in the house again - just my luck! :C

I think this 'unusual' behaviour is most common either just before or just after hibernation, probably reflecting the need to feed up fairly urgently. Have also seen day bats, but like other people responding to this and the earlier thread, I think only early and late in the season. On a separate thread yesterday, I described how foxes become diurnal every Oct and Nov here in Lithuania - there's one particular field where I usually see up to five foxes at whatever time I visit.

aint seen the day-time flying bat recently, but was kept entertained during half time at st james park while my team was busy getting stuffed 4-1, by a pippestrelle bat flying around above the terraces infront of 52,000 angry fans today! - was better than the match itself!!!

I was at the game too, but unfortunately didn't see the bat. You're right about the match!
