Salty if you are in the south of the county you could always check out the RSPB reserve at Hodbarrow. It is on the coastal walkway. If you catch the tide at the right time there are a vast number of waders, and the views across the Irish sea and across the mountain range are quite spectacular.Or you could take a trip on the Ratty( open railway) from Ravenglass, and you are very likley to see Red Squirrels as you go up the Eskdale Valley. Also the Solway Firth is an excellent place for the migrating birds.

Buttermere and the surrounding mountains. Very impressive, some hard walking, but could be some good wildlife around.
