View Full Version : Pigeon proof table?

In another thread I mentioned a design for a pigeon proof table. Here is the picture of the design, the highest end should have an opening of about 175mm with the 'shallow' end being 100mm. I reckon this will deter larger birds from coming in with little room to land and yet be large enough for LBJs to alight and exit from the other end it they need to. The bars should provide an initial perching spot before hopping into table to feed. What do you guys and gals think?

Looks good to me Andrew, though the 175mm may still be a bit high unless you make the roof overhang that side by a couple of inches. They are quite adept at gettng onto my table which has low sides but 180 mm high ends.

You could literally knock 50mm of both measurements as it won't deter the small birds getting on. Last year I surrounded the sides of my table with 25mm x 35mm plastic chicken wire to use it as a mealworm feeder for Blue Tits and even Starlings managed to get in and out quite easily. I think most birds are quite scawny under those fluffy feathers so don't worry about building too small. It would make great weather protection too.

Downside is that you can't see them as clearly.

Thanks for the recommendations Ian, I felt that making them too low might scare off some birds but apparently not after your suggestions.

My rooks would find a way in, so I agree that it would be beter to lower it a little allround. Well done though. I think it very clever of you to have that sloping roof.

Thanks for the encouraging words, I have decided to knock 50mm off the depths.
