Trip Report 1-5/10/2004
Satara is probably one of the best rest camps in the Kruger Park as it satisfies all tastes. The area currently has 7 prides of lions which translates into a lot of game or they would not be there. This in turn means birds - vultures etc. There are a wide variety of raptors, heron, stork etc. There are a number of dams, rivers and waterholes to keep one busy with the cameras all day. For those into mammals you will see at least 4 of the big 5 if you keep your eyes open, the leopard remaining the elusive one. There are plenty giraffe, buffalo, and a wide range of other animals to be seen and provided you keep your eyes open you will see much more than you expected. Don't beleive those who say you only see game in the early morning and afternoons. You can get full days of viewing here. Night drives are also recommended from this camp. Croc and hippo are plentiful and of particular note is the area north-west of Satara where you will most likely see rhino in groups of 3-5.
The camp has a cafe, restuarant, good shop, ATM for small amounts, filling station, car wash, and is generally very pleasant. The serviced chalets are comfortable and its very much an early to bed, early to rise situation seeing that there is just not enough time for everything.
Great position for getting to other camps and following some of th best viewing routes in the park. 10/10 on all points.
Recommended lenses: 24~70, 70~200 (or 28~300) and 100~400 (a must)
Camera Bodies: 2 if possible
Flash: Night drives?
See you there one day!
