I would like to suggest to anyone planning a trip to bird in Costa Rica that you contact Bob Barnes and Associates who work with Alberto Vargas. Web page is:
http://www.valleywild.org/costa_rica.htm

I met Bob at the Central Valley Birding Symposium held last month in Stockton, California, USA. He was the co-leader of one of the day trips that I went on. Bob was formerly the director of one of the Central Valley National Wildlife Refuges. One of the things I like about this new effort is that trip profits are donated to fund your local non-profit and/or Central California nature non-profits.

Personally I would prefer to look for a body that put the profits, or at least some of them, back into nature conservation in the actual area, in this case Costa Rica. There is at least one such operator in the country, supporting lodges such as Tiskita and Solimar.

I don't know that Bob and Associates don't do that as well and would certainly urge anyone interested to ask and compare tour operators. Just wanted to suggest them as an option when BFers search for trips to Costa Rica. Barbara
