The Russian oil giant YUKOS is trying to get a permit form the Buryatian (former Soviet state now part of the Russian federation) government through the virgin taiga of the Tunkinsky national Park on the shores of Lake Baikal.
Local peoples and conservationists need international support by 1 April when the matter will be under consideration by the responsible minister.
Not only is the fantastic landscape with its flora and fauna threatened - Snow Leopard and many birds - an oil leakin the Baikal basin would pollute this World heritage site and cause irremedial damage. The russians have a very bad track record in this respect - more oil leaks out than is transported.
