go second hand if possible Timmy
u will get a much better quality pair
try the websites of a few of the companies
or if you're in Norfolk soon try Cley-Spey. They have a lot of good second hand gear
Nikon SE bins are porro prism. They are exceptionally good

The Nikon 8x30 EII are in that price range and should be your reference binocular - try these first (they're not waterproof but you have a coat?).
The SE's are priced about £450 and are probably rare second-hand.
You'll find that, in your price range, porroprisms are almost always superior optically to roof prisms.

the Nikon EII are £289.
You may want to check out the Nikon HG10x32 - £349 a top bin at a mid range price.
If you want something new as opposed to second hand and find you prefer the handling of roofs then there are a number of decent roofs in that price range Bushnell Legends 8x32, Opticron Veranos, the Delta range from in-focus..
I accept that porros outperform roofs £ for £ but I find roofs more comfortable to use....

Tim,
What kind of bins do you use now — and does that tongue get in the way?

Bushnell Legends are pretty neat Pete...
my ex used them in Peru for a couple of days until i nicked 'em and gave her my Nikon HGs!!! I just preferred the cheaper bins for some reason...
worth a look Timmy

If you have an Ace Optics near you take him along and try their "Avian" range. My wife and I use the 8x42's (£289) and we think they are excellent.
As individual preference is so important he has to try several pairs for himself.
Isn't it great that we have such choice of good, waterproof optics at, relatively cheap prices!
