Even though overnight temperatures across much of the nation are still below freezing, observers in the Carolinas and elsewhere have been reporting arrival of the first Purple Martin "scouts." Although we've seen this species flying over Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History in summers past, we've never had them nest here--in part because we never took time to put up any gourds or martin houses.
This year is different, however, and "This Week at Hilton Pond" we offer a photo essay about Purple Martins and the housing we just erected for them. To read about these amazing insect-eaters and our new gourd lodging, please visit the installment for 22-28 February 2005 at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek050222.html
As always we include an account of all birds banded this week, as well as a list of interesting recaptures.
I welcome comments and questions about this week's installment. :-)
Happy Nature Watching!
