In one of the hides at my local patch yesterday I saw a birder take a very good picture of a bird by holding his digital camera upto his scope.

I have tried this this morning with my scope (Leica APO 62) and my digital camera (Fujifilm S304) and it,s no good.

Can anyone recommend a camera which will give good results using this method .I not too keen going down the adapter route.

The Contax SL300RT and Kyocera equivalents are very useful for hand holding due to them being small and lightweight. In addition the plastic filter holder nicely sits on top of the eyepeice and the swivel body makes for easy viewing. The fast multi shot operation means you reduce the chance of camera shake. On top of that they fit in your pocket!

They are no longer being made but are still avialable.

Hi Max,

Ian has made some fine recommendations in the models he suggests. Especially with the 'fast multi-shot operation' feature. I use the Nikon Coolpix 4500 for digiscoping, attached to a Swarovski ST80HD scope, using an adapter; but have taken very pleasing images just holding the camera to scope. The models suggested above are the more up to date cameras digiscopers are looking at right now, but if you can check out the Coolpix 4500 it may be worth a look. Im just not sure how well this particular model will work with your scope. Just an idea...... :)

I use both the Coolpix 995 (replaced by the 4500) and the Kyocera SL400.
Both work extremely well with my Leica 77APO.
