Well, here is the finished item, as promised. Cost: about £10 and one heck of a lot of head scratching, unpicking and resewing!
The outer cover is from a child's eBay waterproof (it is actually more of an olive green colour than it looks in the photos), it is padded with wadding and lined with nylon. Probably not waterproof enough to drop it in a river, but I stuffed it with kitchen towel and put it under the shower and it seems to be OK.
