Thumbs up to London Camera Exchange for giving me a refund on a pair 8x42 Ultravids this week. They offered to me give a new pair straight away but when I asked for my money back they didn’t hesitate. I’m not Leica bashing as I’ve had an APO scope for a while and it’s always been spot on in terms of construction and view, so when looking a new set of bins I went straight for the same brand. I admit I’d heard about the rough focus wheel which I was going to put up with, hoping it might smooth out after a while, but the play in it became too much. It gradually got worse over a few days and in the end was driving me mad. When changing the direction of the focus wheel, there was a horrible dead spot where nothing happened. Maybe I’m just being fussy, I don’t know... Anyway, well done L.C.E.

For £800+ you have a right to be fussy. It would have driven me nuts.

I think the point that Kevster is making is that his Leicas focusing was dodgy and he's praising LCE for offering him a refund.

Yep - don't think it really matters that (say) my Leica bins are fine, if his were buggered!

A full refund no argument? Well done LCE indeed, excellent endorsement.

Well, there IS obviously a wide variation in Ultravids. I had a chance to try extensively both a 10x42 and a 8x42 side by side. In that case, the 8x42 was like you said, smooth and precise as one would expect in this price range. The 10x42, however, drove me nuts just within that testing time for its very rough focus. In fact, I usually was unable(!) to hit the precise spot in the close focus area I mostly needed. So, the best Leica representatives can do is to refund without a fuss! Otherwise the reputation will soon be gone. Meanwhile, it is hoped that that focus issue will be dealt with rapidly at Leica.

thats what i was trying to get at - that a few people are saying the focusing is dodgy on the ultravids - not just the odd one. im sure im not the only 10x42 owner who is happy with his bins, how come they are getting a bad review (focussing wise)?
