I'm going on my first abroad birding holiday in a few weeks time. I've purchased the birdguides mallorca pack so know the spots to visit etc.

On the Gosney video there were meeting(s) at a hotel in puerto pollensa, can anyone tell me if these still take place (and on what day if they do, still Friday?) as the video was shot in the 90's.

TIA

Jeff

Hi Jeff

I went to a few of those meetings but I have a feeling that they have stopped now. Someone with more up to date info will come on to let you know for definite.

There are some excellent sites in Mallorca to visit.

BTW where are you staying, as I might be able to give you the odd site that might not be in the books.

John,

Nearest town is Algaida a few clicks from Palma.

ok Jeff

I am at work at the moment but will look at some of the sites at the southern end of the island as well as the better know northern sites.

I think I have a trip list on my PC. If so I will e-mail it to you.

Hi Jeff,

Graham Hearl used to run the meetings, but he unfortunately died last year. Graham was the RSPB liasion for GOB so maybe you should contact them.

If you haven't already got one, get yourself a copy of Graham Hearls book, 'A Birdwatching Guide To Mallorca', Arlequin Press ISBN 09522019 76.

It has plenty of info on sites.

I'm going out to Mallorca from 1st to 14th of May...it's a great place for birding but you're best hiring a car to get the most out of it.

Frank,

I have two guides (from the birdguides pack) and a video, i think it's the one by G.Hearl and the other(s) by D.Gosney.

We've hired a car, being out in rural mallorca we had to, so will be travelling all over the island.

Cheers

Jeff

A wonderful island. Don't neglect the northern resevoirs for raptors and wheatears. Some good sea watching in certain areas.

I have e-mailed Jeff with my trip report but for anyone else that visits the island there is one place I would highly recommend, apart from the obvious well known northern sites. Salinas de Levante which is down on the Southern area of the island. This is an area of salt pans and the potential there is fantastic. Well worth a look (mind you it was 7 years ago that I went, they may have dried up since).

The Salinas de Levante are still there all right and well worth a visit. They can, hoever be extemely muddy and potentially treacherous in wet weather. I guess that May should be OK though.

You will be able to find the Banos easily and parking there is not difficult. You then walk along "Eddie's track" to see a whole variety of waders and waterfowl, crakes, wagtails etc. I had a pair of peregrine sitting in the field there a few years ago and rock sparrows are present in noisy flocks.

I heard that he meetings stopped because the hotel provided the room free in return for the custom that the birders put over the bar - only most didn't even buy a drink out of courtesy.
