I'm hoping to get some hummingbirds this year after having one fly so close to me last year I could have touched it:)
I live in northern NY on thr Ontario/Quebec borders of Canada. When should the hummingbirds be making an appearance in this region? I've got one feeder out on the tree now, is it too soon for them though?
Thanks much from a new birder

Having lived in Sault Ste Marie, ON I would anticipate somewhere around mid May to mid June, but that is just a guess based on my personal experience.

I haven't seen any transients yet, here. Some springs I've had little travelers by this time, mostly it is early May thru June none stay around in July and August, then a surge in September thru the 2nd week in October.
I don't think my scrub lines count as 'woods' for these guys.

We get them in Nova Scotia / Canada during the first week of May.
Many people have feeders up by the end of April to accomodate the early birds

i think the only species found on the east coast with any regularity is the ruby throated hummingbird.

Jacana:
While the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only NESTING species on the east coast, several other species are seen and banded each year - though not with any degree of expectation.
