UK branches of Lidl, the "cheap" supermarket, are selling some Meade 10x50 binoculars. Though they're not top-of-the-range, they're remarkably good, and at 14.99 (yes, under fifteen pounds!) well worth having as a spare pair, or for beginners. They're certainly on a par with some 100+ quid bins.

Meade are better known for their astronomy telescopes.

As with all Lidl offers, they're "when they're gone they're gone", so you'd probably need to buy them today, or tomorrow at the latest.

[Afterthought: Has anyone else tried them?]

Lidl also have hiking gear (boots, rucksacks, clothing, etc.) in their current offers.

Hi

Yep agree !

Curiosity got the better of me today and having seem some previous rather shabby compacts at Lidl thought i would take a glance
looked through 2 pair (still dozen or so left at Hull Lidl) Both properly collimated (to my eyes anyway) 6.5 fov (114m) BAK 4 prisms fully coated good eye relief just a little heavy and probably getting on for 20 foot close focus limit
Marked on box as 5 year guarantee and can honestly say these are really very good and much better than they have any right to be especially as a spare pair and at £14.99 tremendous value

Apology i also answered this on another bargain bin bird forum thread by mistake !
perhaps my eyesight isnt that great !!

Guys, would any of you [UK-based] folks be willing to help my young friend out ? As I posted in this (http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=31876) thread those binoculars seemto fit the bill perfectly (and also fit in price-wise). Would anybody be willing to sell their pair or purchase a new pair of those Meade 10x50s (and inspect it in store beforehand to make sure there are no collimation or focusing problems) and ship it over here ?

This seems by far the best offer (price/quality) wise, especially given the fact that - unlike with online sales (eBay et al) - you can actually inspect the binocs before purchasing them. I imagine the stock will run out soon and since lusy April weather is coming to an end this is the best opportunity to score a usable pair of binoculars for a beginner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since I'm working on getting that kid his very first pair I'll be sorting out the money part (for binoculars + shipping) with whoever is willing to help him out. I'd like to get him the best pair he can find for the money and nothng I've considered thus far came even remotely close to what you guys describe here.

So many hits on this thread and nobody willing to sell their own pair or walk down to that store again to purchase a new one on that kid's behalf before the stocks run out :-C

Aww bugger, they sold out at two places now and one person cannot help either. Anyvbody else with Lidl supermarket nearby selling these Meade's 10x50 willing to lend a hand ? It's not like this would cost you anything but few minutes of your time - just think of all the good karma flowing your way in return, you're bound to win the lottery, marry a movie star and locate damn near inexhaustible oilfield right under your cellar ... or at least feel good about helping a kid out ;)

So much for the "cool" plan - they ran out of stock everywhere :C Back to square one - if anybody sees a pair of those Meade 10x50s at Lidl's still in stock and wouldn't mind shipping them over here please drop me a line, we'd like to buy them. I can send you the money via Paypal or [cash by] snail-mail, just snatch them *before* they run out again :eek!: It kinda became personal when I offered to lend my hand in choosing them - I *will* find a decent pair now ad won't stop until I do. It's neighbour's kid but it gives me that fuzzy warm feeling inside, relieving everything that I missed in my youth ... oh well B (: B (: B (:
