View Full Version : Do Gadwall always hang left ?

I was intigued by what I presume was courtship behaviour among Gadwall when I was at Cley Marshes last weekend. I hadn't seen these birds before, and they intermittently would lean to the left. There were six Gadwall altogether, four males and two females. No matter what direction they were pointing, and whether they were alone or next to another Gadwall, they would lean over to their left side for several seconds; they looked like listing ships! I didn't at any point see them lean to their right, and I watched them for several minutes. Is this usual Gadwall behaviour ? Do they always lean to the left ?!!!

Were they just watching the RAF doing their thing?

They look like my ducks when they are looking up at something in the sky above on the right (mostly raptors or other birds flying above). If it had been on the left they'd probably have tilted their heads to the right. Barbara

during Breeding season but not gadwall's
