I used my binoculars in light rain today.(wasn't crazy about doing that) Although they are supposedly waterproof I wonder if you should do anything differently as far as maintanence or cleaning after you use them in the rain. Any advice? :h?:

It can often be the case that rain (especially light rain) carries a lot of dust and grit with it. I'd suggest rinsing the binoculars gently with clean water (provided they really are waterproof !) and then 'dry them with a towel'. It's important not to subject waterproof binoculars to much water pressure when you clean them since most are not designed to withstand much pressure.

Clean the objective lenses less than the occular ones - it crud on those that effects the view more. This will keep potential accidental scratching to a minimum.

After a good soaking in the rain, every day in Scotland, I rinse my EL 8.5's under a tap and let them air dry. I then clean occular glass with soft damp cloth. I clean objective lenses as little as poss - once a month !

I am sorry, i can't resist this one:

...And after following all the advise on this thread, make sure that you dance a Polka, so that the droplets of rain on the binocular body dry in an orderly manner. ;)

I don't know the Polka but perhaps a few steps I learned from Saturday Night Fever will suffice.

For most, this is true. But for the die-hard shore bird person, there are Fujinons, Swift Seahawks and such ilk that can be taken to a depth of several feet for several days. Regardless of the price tag, or name on the side, none of the center focus binos are going to be AS waterproof as a good, individual "marine" bino. Nevertheless, their individual focus construction makes them less than desirable for most types of birding.

Just a thought.

..you could always put them in a platic bag and tie a knot in it (remembering to use phase coated Asda/Wall Mart sandwich bags :-O
