I just took delivery of a pair of Zeiss 10x40 ClassiC's that were said to be saleman samples. They're in fine condition, but on the bottom-side of the hinge, there are three XXX"s engraved. I've had a couple pairs of these binos in my hands in the past and have never seen these markings. Any ideas as to their meaning, if anything? I know Nikon marks their refurbs with a gold dot on the focus wheel. Any chance these could be refurbs? I've never heard of Zeiss selling refurbs, but anything is possible I suppose.

Thanks for any info.

In Know that some of the original Victory binos that were discontinued in 2004 were sold as refurbished items in the USA.

I saw precisely the same XXX markings on a refurbished Nikon LX in a large USA outdoor retail shop. I was told the store marked them to avoid any warranty confusion.

Just an FYI. I received the following response from Zeiss:

"We do not mark our binoculars. It should not effect your warranty.
