I am so used to seeing a nuthatch feeding upside down on the peanuts, that when he was feeding on the oats, the right way up he seemed strange. Here's a photo of him.

Here he is in his usual pose.

My nuthatches feed in whatever position they happen to be comfortable in! Sometimes, if you watch them, they'll almost feed in circles. Quite entertaining.

You are right, the first pic didn't even look like a Nuthatch. But oh that second pic, that's the little guy I know and love. Ours came back just today. He must have migrated for the winter. We were sooooo happy to see him! Good Birding to you and the pics are great!

I see Nuthatches feeding in all poses but they usually are upside down.

And he look so similar to the Red-Breasted Nuthatches we see here some winters (but not this one, darn it!). Very cute little guy!

Berverly, I only have two red-breasted nuthatches this winter and no white-breasted ones at all. I have no idea why. I miss them too! :(

Does your nuthatch feed on a bird table, as mine all feed all over the place but a pair of them feed on the table as soon as I put mealworms out, there they are, If I could take a decent picture I would put it up on the gallery, but I am to Photography what Hitler was to peace. Nina.

I think LMG that is a trick question as I can see that the feeders are two different types. Are you trying to catch us out. the Nuthatch as with any bird is just after the peanuts.

Nice pictures.

The other birds don't, although the gs woodpecker usually feeds sideways on my nuts. Here's a typical pose.

All very informative about all these different positions!
I never see a nuthatch on my patch, would love it if they were to appear.
My woodpecker always hangs right at the bottom end of the feeder. Not a good position for photographing him, he does however come via other posts and branches stealthely to the feeder, so that might be the moment to catch him!
Your woodpecker looks funny and it surely is unusual to see the nuthatch the right way up!

My nuthatches will feed anywhere and in any position at all. They particularly like the peanut-flavored suet, and on the suet feeder can be upside-down, rightside-up, or anything in between.

I get mostly brown-headed nuthatches, rarely a white-breasted, but have yet to see a red-breasted. I wish some would come my way.

Caught him off guard, didn't you:-). I'll bet if his friends saw this, he would be the laughing stock of the neighborhood:-).

Good shots,
