............The first census of golden eagles in a decade has been ordered amid concern that tough new wildlife crime legislation is failing to protect Scotland’s most magnificent bird of prey. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) believes the numbers of golden eagles is in decline because of continued persecution by gamekeepers. The Scottish countryside, which is perfect eagle territory, should be capable of supporting up to 600 breeding pairs, the RSPB says. But recent unofficial counts have indicated that numbers have remained at best static since 420 pairs were officially logged ten years ago or have begun to fall.
