I have a Sony DSC-F717 - can it be reliably attached to a Nikon Fieldscope for digiscoping?

Hi,I have the same question with my 707, Have you looked at MaxView™ Digiscoping Adapters from Scopetrnix? Has anybody out there used a 717 or 707 with any results?

Hi there,

Have you tried hand-holding the camera to the eyepiece to assess the extent of vignetting first? I would be surprised if you could get a half decent image with the F717 (or F707 for that matter). Cameras with large diameter big zoom range lenses tend not to be very suitable for digiscoping. I suggest you try offering the camera up to a scope before you spend any money at all.

Regards,

Duncan.

The lens of the camera vignettes at any zoom setting, unless you use a scope with a 2" focuser. If you step into the digital zoom range - vignetting is gone, but so is the quality of the pictures. At that combined zoom setting the magnification for digiscoping is too large. I have the 717 in my collection but failed to digiscope with it with all my scopes and eyepieces. If you are willing to do some cropping then it's OK, but then you end up with a 3 megapixel camera.
As a digicam for general use - the 717 is an excellent camera. I use it lately for special purposes only - IR photography and 360 degrees shots with the 360 OneVR Kaidan adapter where it excells.

I also have a 717 and agree with Yossi. It is a fine camera but totally unsuitable for digiscoping, and believe me I have tried. Apart from the lens being too big in diameter it is also quite heavy and unbalanced on any setup with a 'scope.

Hi,

I have spent the best part of today staring through my new Swarovski ATS 80 scope with 20-60X S zoom eyepiece - a great birthday present! I've also been trying to capture some images using my ever faithful Sony f707 camera but these are rather disappointing which has led me to register here to try and learn more.

Reading through some of your comments it seems that this is not a suitable camera for digiscoping? Do I start looking now for something more user friendly that works well with my scope (like what?), or is it worth carrying on with the Sony f707 trying to get better results? I also have a Sony digital video handycam 1.5 megapixels. Would this be any good?

Thanks in anticipation.

Canon A95 is suitable, the old Nikon CP4500 is suitable, the Nikon CP8400 is suitable (with a very limited zoom range) and many more cameras with the appropriate adapters. The Sony DV camera is good for videoscoping only, as the stills quality is quite bad. I have the PC350 which is 3MP, and even this is not good.
