Hello everyone my name is Jaison,

I am trying to get my uncle a gift for his birthday, and I just wanted to know if anyone can give me advice on these binos?


FUJINON 7 - 21X40 ZCF BINOCULARS

What would you rate them on a 1 - 10? Are they good quality optics? He recently moved near a beach and keeps talking about the birds, so I thought it would be a nice little present for him. Please let me know since his bday is coming up in a few days.

I didn't find any reference to this particular model. I found Meade and Bushnell versions, but no Fujinon.

At any rate, folks usually recommend against zoom binoculars. They simply do not work as well as a fixed power pair. Although people vary in their ability to hold binoculars steady, few people would be happy with hand held 21 power binoculars. The magnify the shakes of your hands too much.

I suggest your uncle would be happier with a 7 or 8x pair, or 10x at most. If he is on the beach, and can hold 10x binoculars steady, the extra power might be an advantage.

If you give folks here an idea of how much you want to spend, I am sure you will get some better suggestions.

The 16x50 might well be hard to hold steady, and require a tripod or some other support to take advantage of the magnification.

The 7x50 Meibo are individual focus, so you have to focus each eyepieces separately. Not fun when trying to follow birds at changing distances.

You might consider the Nikon Action 7x35. They seem to get good press for a pair that costs less than $100.

Alan is right about the Meibos. The kiss of death for birding except for shorebirds and raptors up in the crags.

BUT, even used a 7x50 Meibo (marine bino) is easily worth $300. Buy, it for $100, sell it for $300 and use the money, perhaps, for a Nikon E2--a world-class bino without the world-class price.
