Just thought I would make my first post after reading this site extensively for a couple of months.
I have been the proud owner of a pair of Pentax DCF in both the 8x42 and the 10x42. I also own a pair of compact Leopolds. I have always wanted to graduate to a higher level of optics. I have been studying and debating now for a couple of months.
At first, I wanted the 8 x 42 Ultravids. This was what I thought I always wanted. So bright, so clear, so even. Good rugged feel to them. Then, I looked through the Swaro in the 10 x 32. Awesome view, great feel in the hands, good fit...but I was scared I would think I was missing something without the 42 mm. So, if I went with the Swaro...I was thinking more the 8.5 x 42. I did a lot of reading on this forum about this binoc, bid on several pairs on Ebay (but was concerned about buying used, but thought I was going to save $). Then, on this forum, I read some nice things about the Zeiss FL. This binoc is a little harder to find where I am. However, at the Bass Pro Shops in Nashville, TN I recently checked out the Ultravid 8x42, Swaro 8.5x42, and the Zeiss Victory FL (i think 8x42). The Ultravids were the same great binoc I originally fell in love with. The Swaros felt good in my hands and were a great fit, but the look was somewhat "cooler". The Zeiss did not necessarily fit too good, and they just felt "cheaper" in my hands....although you could tell that the glass was good.
Bottom line....for the $$ and the quality of the binoc...I am going with my first love the Ultravid 8x42. They are on the way. I have already sold one pair of Pentax...am going to sell the other pair of Pentax to justify this investment (although I am afraid I am going to miss the Pentax 8x42 which might make a good spare pair).
Another note: When shopping, I noticed somewhat of a blackout prob with the Ultravid's 10x42's...did not seem to be as bad with the 8's. I am hoping that I get used to them as time goes on, and this becomes less and less of a problem.
I am obviously somewhat of a amateur. But I look forward to my new purchase...and hope that this takes me to the next level with binocs.
