Can anyone tell me what these are? I photographed them on July 21 near where I live.

Good luck to you all! ;)

P.S. In case you didn't note which forum this is posted in, this is a quiz photo...

Vesper sparrow- Eye ring- light beak-streaked breast- pink legs. Hard to tell anything about the tail at this angle.

They look a lot like siskins.

Yay, someone finally guessed!

But you'll have to keep guessing... :D

Hopefully they can actually be identified from this angle. I really should have made sure, but since I've started, we'll keep going and I'll give some clues as needed.

[first hint] buckskin hawk's the closest

OK, these have to be either Cassin's Finches or Brewer's Sparrows. I'd guess Cassin's Finch.

Maybe this picture will help you. I think it's one of the same birds, but it might be an adult.

Grasshopper Sparrow, and if that is not right, its a LBJ.

I agree a Juvenile Grasshopper. This view is better but still no tail detail. Not a Vesper - No "mustache" (At least that is what I call the lines coming down on the side from the beak.)

LBJ is what???? I know he was the US President from 1963 to 1969.

LBJ = "lttle brown job" I.e., anything that can't be ID'd. :bounce:

Oops, forgot to put in my guess.

Lincoln's Sparrow? Broad grayish eyebrow, fine streaks on breast and flanks, complete cream-colored eyering...

Okay, you got it. It's a Grasshopper Sparrow (or 2)! Well done, and I'm very sorry if I made it impossible.

(Good try, Katy, but better luck next time. ;) :D )

I didn't see the additional picture, but the first two had me looking for sparrows with black flank-streaking!
