Weeting Heath

I will be passing Weeting heath on Tuesday next week. Does anyone no if the Stone Curlew are still around? I think its a bit late, but not really sure how early these birds leave.

Hi Gary,

They should still be around at this time of the year. Some are reported to hang around until well into the autumn and there are occasional small flocks around in late summer. If you've not been before the reserve is well worth a visit anyway and if you have time you can also pop into the new RSPB reserve at Lakenheath Washes, just down the road.

There were problems seeing these birds as I am led to believe that the eggs were predated.

Gary , Suggest you ring Weeting as flocks of birds have already been reported at other sites so weeting's birds may have moved on,tho not out of the area we regularly see them late in the Autumn. PM me if you want further info

Be aware, too, that the birds have been unusually elusive this year. I've made two trips to Weeting without seeing them; on the last visit I spoke to a birder who has now tried seventeen times, without success. In previous years, they have been really easy...
