Hi,
I have a compact 35 mm film camera and i just want to take photographs to at least A3 or maybe A2 .
Would this be possible?
My husband has a D70 but says that A2 And probably A3 would be out of his range plus its a camera which i have not got a clue about (although i will learn) and also far to big for what i want it for.

Its a canon ZNR1 or something or i can use my Coolpix advantex drop in one but the photographs are twice as expensive.

1.Which one would be best
2 Is it possible to blow them up to this size.
2 . Also i can get a 400 or 300 film as i think it could be a murky day.

Thanks

Many SLR lenses would start to struggle to print up to A3 or A2 so it probably depends how you define 'just want' from your compact camera!

Viewing them from a distance may be OK but close-up would reveal the limits of the lens

I was thinking more of A3 size or maybe 15X10 but no smaller.

I am also lokking for a photograph of a natural weather landscape scene of A2 size as i am fascinated by meteorology for my front room
This offcoarse would be bought from somewhere. Maybe Lightning or sea or my husbands favourite which is a Forest scene with fog and mist.

Is there a website i can find that you would recommend where i could buy one

Many thanks

For a 35mm to enlarge to A3 is times 12 and to enlarge to A2 is times 17. Yes it is possible to enlarge from 35mm to these sizes but....

And it is a BIG but.

The image has to be completely sharp and in focus. Also it has to have very low grain otherwise the grain will look like golf balls. The chances of getting a 35mm neg that good is quite rare. 20 years ago I did a lot of Black and white photography and my own darkroom. I used 25 ISO fine grain film and only 1 in 50 shots would blow up to this size nicely. Thats after taking great care in taking the shot in the first place.

The lens on compact cameras are made to a standard for postcard size prints. If you get a good negative then a 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 if your lucky.

As Adey has said if you blow up a poor negative you have to stand so far back before it looks good and guess what it's the size of a postcard from that distance.

This is where large format cameras come into their own as less enlargement is required from the nagative.

Attached is a shot from Knole park Sevenoaks which is scaled down for the web. Taken with a 20D and a 300mm Canon top quaility lens. I have managed to get an A2 size print off a colour laserprinter by joining the a4 sheets together. I'm concidering getting an A3 photo done from it.

Please forgive the shot they are technically captive but posted as an example. Otherwise I will remove if it causes objections.

Hi Rob,
I hope you had a good Holiday.
I have been to Bardon a few times and have just missed a good shot of a Few kingfishers. They really are marvellous birds, that blue is just stunning.
The same place now twice in a row (just before the dam) but you really do have to be so so quite.Apart from that nothing else doing a few warblers maybe.
I will get him soon.

Cheers mate

Hi free

Holiday next Saturday - Just hope weather keeps bright for some bird and scenic shots in north west wales. Yes it's amazing how many Kingkisher are in the area but are very elusive. Last Christmas I had the chance of some close up shots (within 20ft) but the 300D would not wake up fast enough. At that time of the year they tend to perch in the trees around the lake. I am hoping they will do the same this year and I'll be ready for them.

I've heard from others they tend to gather near the dam towards the end of summer. They are sure more public at the moment as I've had many sightings from a distance.

PS - Just to spur us on a couple of shots too far away ( 40-50 yards) The lower one is where it flew through the frame as I was getting a shot of a heron and perched 20ft away from heron so sitting on the edge of the shot. The upper one is as it flew away - may of been a fairly good in flight shot if in focus and higher shutter speed.

PS - Did you bother to get those shots blown up ?

Mr Free's D70 would be more than capable at that size of reproduction... are you sure you can't get used to the size of this camera? It would save a lot of trouble.
cheers,
Andy

I agree with Andy - show Mr Free that you can take better shots than him ;) remember plenty of depth of field so that you have an overall sharp image. Then you can enlarge until your hearts content.
