View Full Version : autofocus hunts

I have noticed that my Sigma 100-300mm f4 autofocus has a tendency to hunt a bit. Doesn't really matter what kind of light is available. Just today, I missed a kingfisher at about 10meters because the autofocus picked up a very 'drab' piece of palm frond instead of a large blue and white bird! I am using a D50. Is there an optimum mode to use for shooting small birds? I have read the manual, but I dont find it particularly helpful.

Another example of this hunting behavior involved a sunbird at about 5 meters. I was fine when I had the center element on his yellow chest. However, when I move the center focus element onto his dark head (trying to get a sharp eye), the lens began to hunt back and forth for something to focus on.

Appreciate the assistance.
